How Metrics Are Built
Methodology
This page documents source data, transformation logic, and interpretation boundaries used across Calgary Crime Map.
Data Inputs
Primary inputs are Calgary community-reported incident datasets and related community metadata from Open Calgary.
Source access terms are available at City of Calgary Open Data Terms.
Core Metrics
- Count: total selected incidents across the selected period.
- Rate per 1,000: incidents normalized by resident population.
- Change: selected period compared with the immediately previous period of equal length.
- Stability: coefficient of variation over up to 24 months of monthly totals.
Known Limits
- Data quality depends on upstream reporting consistency and timeliness.
- Small populations can amplify rate volatility and should be interpreted with caution.
- Incident totals describe reported events, not all events that occurred.
